Writing Curriculum Intent

At our school, we believe that writing is a vital life skill and a powerful way for children to communicate their thoughts, ideas and experiences. Our writing curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, develop technical accuracy and build confident, fluent writers who can express themselves clearly and effectively across a wide range of contexts.

In EYFS, children build strong foundations through the Unlocking Letters and Sounds (ULS) programme, which supports the development of early writing skills through systematic phonics and handwriting. In Year 1, pupils further develop their skills through Curious Quests alongside ULS handwriting, enabling them to write with increasing independence, control and purpose.

From Year 2 and beyond, children follow the Churchfield Writing Curriculum, which is built around high-quality texts. This approach develops pupils’ grammar, composition and understanding of different text types, enabling them to write for a range of purposes and audiences. Through explicit teaching of sentence structure, vocabulary choices and text organisation, children are supported to become thoughtful and skilled writers.

Across all year groups, handwriting and dictation are taught explicitly and consistently to build fluency and stamina. By strengthening transcription skills and reducing the cognitive load of writing, pupils are better able to focus on the content and quality of their work. We provide an inclusive and nurturing environment, with timely interventions for children who need additional support, ensuring that every child is empowered to unlock their full potential as a writer.

Our intent is for every child to leave our school as a confident, capable and motivated writer, ready to communicate effectively in their future learning and in the wider world.
