Reading Curriculum Intent
At our school, we are committed to developing confident, fluent readers who find joy and meaning in books. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, and we recognise that secure phonics knowledge underpins all communication and early reading success. We use Unlocking Letters and Sounds (ULS) supported guided reading materials in EYFS and KS1 to ensure children build strong foundations in decoding, blending and fluency.
As children progress through the school, we follow the CUSP Reading Curriculum to develop deep comprehension skills. Through carefully selected high-quality texts, pupils learn to retrieve information, make inferences, explore vocabulary and develop a critical understanding of what they read. We aim to expose children to a wide range of authors, genres and themes, enabling them to broaden their vocabulary, cultural understanding and love of literature.
We provide an inclusive and nurturing reading environment where all children are supported to succeed. We recognise that children progress at different rates, and targeted interventions are delivered throughout the school to ensure that no child is left behind. Reading is taught explicitly and systematically, while also being promoted as an enjoyable, meaningful and empowering life skill.
Our intent is for every child to leave our school as a confident, capable reader, equipped with the skills to access the wider curriculum, communicate effectively and reach their full potential.
