  • Elaine Harmon's funeral

    Fri 01 Nov 2019

Elaine's funeral took place at Sedgemoor Crematorium on Friday 1st November. The Nursery was closed for the day to allow for members of staff to attend. Elaine had worked at the nursery since 2006 and many children and parents worked closely with her over the past 13 years both in the nursery and school. Many of the older children remember her as their key worker and really the first member of Churchfield staff they got to know.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Elaine's family, friends and the parents and children of the nursery at this time.

  • Mr Philcox, Headteacher, announces his retirement.

    Thu 24 Oct 2019

Mr. Philcox has informed the school of his decision to retire on the 3rd April 2020. The governors are sorry to hear of his forthcoming departure, as in his two years of headship here at Churchfield School, he has worked hard to enable our school to continue to improve for all of our children. He has had their wellbeing, their progress and opportunities for new and exciting experiences at the heart of every decision; he will be hugely missed. I am sure you would wish to join me in wishing him the very best for his future, in retirement.

In the meantime, Mrs. Eveleigh, who is the Regional Director for the BWMAT, will continue working closely with Mr Philcox until the end of the spring term to ensure there is a smooth transition to the new Head. The recruitment for the new Headteacher has started and we hope to make an appointment in the very near future.

  • School Council Elections

    Mon 14 Oct 2019
We are delighted that so many children wanted to be part of our School Council. The elections were held last week and the children in Year 4-6 were presented with their School Council badges in Worship this afternoon. Mr. Armstrong spoke of how democracy is important in both in school and in our country. The children are really keen to get started at their first meeting later this week.

  • Times tables at Churchfield

    Mon 16 Sep 2019

At school this year, the children will be focusing on becoming more confident in their times tables.

Years 2-6 will have times table homework books which they will use to complete their times table practise.

You can support your child to learn their tables using games and songs. Here is one game to try:

There are also a wide range of enjoyable times tables songs available on YouTube - why not try them out with your child?

As you will see from the photograph, our new Year 6 have received their ties and are looking very smart indeed! We are pleased with the way that they are settling into being our role models in school.

We have also chosen our new prefect team and head boy and head girl who will wear very special purple ties - please see the latest newsletter for all of the details.

  • Change to the timings of the school day in September 2019

    Thu 04 Apr 2019

Change to the start of school day from September 2019

As a school we have the longest school day of any primary school in Somerset and it is well above the recommended length of the school day for primary children. Following detailed discussions with the BWMAT and Governors, we have taken the decision to reduce the school day by half an hour, starting in September 2019.. Lunch time will be shortened by 15 minutes and we shall shorten the lessons by 15 minutes a day too, so school will end at 3pm. The start time remains the same, children can arrive at 08.15 for Magic Breakfast, gates open for all at 08.40, and shut at 08.50.

We believe that this will benefit the children who get very tired in the afternoon and effective learning is diminished as a result. We shall be continuing every night with our Churchfield Explorers Programme, so there will be plenty to do every evening. This will also make it easier for us to be involved with more sporting activities with other schools.

  • Magic Breakfast is up and running!

    Mon 04 Feb 2019

We opened our doors to the children for the first time serving a Magic Breakfast; a wonderful choice of bagel, cereal and porridge. A big thank you to Di and Heather, our wonderful kitchen team and staff and friends from Churches Together who so kindly volunteered before school to provide a nutritious start to the day!

Mr. Johnstone is the best bagel toaster - ever!

Any child can attend, any day - you choose the days! Please let the office know if you want to change your days or want to start coming along!
