Read the opening paragraph of the text and talk about it with someone. Answer the following questions
What do you think about how it starts the story off?
Does it make you want to read more?
Where do you think the character is?
What do you think is going to happen next?
Activity Three
Read the opening paragraph again, look for the words the author has used for effect (wandered, stumbled) can you think of two other words the author could have used instead, which word do you think is the best? why? Use an online dictionary or thesaurus to help you.
Activity Four
Rewrite the descriptive sentences in this opening paragraph.
Improve the sentence which says "When I woke up, I was in a cold, dark place".
What else could you see?
Where there any lights?
Noises?
How did you feel etc?
Activity Five
Clauses can be joined by conjunctions such as coordination (e.g. or / and / but) and subordination (e.g. when / if / that / because).
Write at least 5 sentences which are joined by conjunctions that the author could have used in this opening paragraph. Such as the space was dark and eerily quiet SO I felt anxious.
