In Reception, we carefully plan and deliver opportunities for each individual to learn and achieve their full potential, helping each child to develop into a confident and competent learner, in order to be successful in their school life and beyond. By giving the children opportunities for well planned ‘free play’ they are able to take control of their own learning and development, make their own decisions and learn from their choices.
We create a happy, stimulating and caring environment for children, where every child is treated as unique and therefore, feels valued, secure and confident to develop a love of learning.
We provide opportunities to have adult led and child initiated activities that are tailored to the child’s individual learning needs.
Emotions and Feelings
Since the children started school full time, a focus for Personal, Social and Emotional Development has been to develop children's emotional literacy.
Each morning, the children have the opportunity to tell the class how they are feeling that day during Check In.
We have been naming our emotions with the help of a story called The Colour Monster. In the story, a monster is confused because he cannot recognise his feelings. With support, he learns to recognise his feelings through colours and names for the emotions (anger, sadness, calm etc). In class, the children acknowledged how their emotions through colours, just like in the story.
Recently, we also began to check in with our feeling throughout the day using the Zones of Regulation. We are then able to discuss these feelings with the children and give them strategies to cope with their emotions.
