Forest school at Churchfield gives children the opportunity to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in our outside environment.

The children attend Forest School in small groups over a number of weekly sessions. Each session is made up of several elements which are flexible to meet the needs of that particular group and individual children. The children take part in a number of outdoor games, including our own version of Hide and Seek- ‘1,2,3 Where Are You?’ to encourage social and cooperative skills.

Challenges are set to develop their skills as individuals and as team members. Our stick tower challenge is a particular favourite with the children. They are asked to work in small teams, develop a strategy for building their tower, build it and then measure it.

We explore the woodland area around school, recording and using what we find out about nature in a number of ways such as forest school diaries and tree fact files. We support the children to develop a wide range of woodland skills such as making wood cookies, stick weaving and clay work (including tree monsters!)

At the end of all this, we have a well deserved hot chocolate and biscuit before returning to class tired, muddy but happy!
